The Ideal Form of Exercise for Your Dog

Blog Post Image

With the hectic lifestyles we lead, we don’t usually care about our own exercising needs, let alone our dogs’. But it is very important that your dog gets the exercise they need. A tired dog is a good dog.

The main benefits of exercising your dog are:

  • Improvement in physical health
  • Improvement in mental health
  • Reduces anxiety and boredom
  • Reduces excessive hyperactivity, barking, or chewing

There are several factors that indicate how much exercise is needed for your dog including its personality, breed, age, and level of fitness. Some dogs have a lot of energy and need to burn it more, while others will be happy with a 10- minute walk around the park.

Every puppy is different from the other. They don’t require as much exercise as needed by an adult dog. The more time you spend with it, the more you will learn about its exercising needs. It is always a good idea to get an opinion from a vet about the amount of daily activity required. Puppies have more energy than an adult dog thus they need to burn it by exercising in short busts. Rather than going for one long walk, try going on short walk throughout the day so your furry little friend can play around without getting too tired. Since your puppy is constantly growing, long walks may be hard on its developing bones and joints.

Adult dog

The breed of your dog plays a big role on its exercising needs. They generally don’t require the same amount of attention as puppies do, but you still need to exercise them for at least 30 minutes to two hours daily. The activities that adult dogs enjoy most are relay-race games, hiking, playing fetch in the park, and having exciting play dates with their furry doggy buddies.

You should also consider the health for your dog as it is a main factor in exercising. If your dog suffers from a medical condition such as hip dysplasia or respiratory or heart issues, you should check with your vet about the appropriate routines of exercise for your dog.

Senior dog

As we grow old, we are not able to carry on with the pace that we used to when we younger. The same is with our dogs. An older dog may not be as active as it used to be, but it still needs the exercise. Exercise provides dogs mental simulation, while keeping them healthy. It is important that you spend time with your dog so that you can understand how much exercise your dog can handle comfortably. If you are not sure on the exercising needs of your dog, it’s better to consult a vet to get advice.

Because of the old age, your dogs’ gait may get stiff from arthritis and they won’t be able to walk as they used to. It’s better to have 30-60 minute walks with your dogs, with two or more session for activities. If your dog has joint issues, swimming would be a great exercise alternative for it.

So get your walking shoes on and take your dog for the run he deserves or hire Fancy Paws Dog Walker. A healthy dog is a happy dog.
