4 Important Questions That You Need to Ask Every Dog Walker

Blog Post Image

It’s hard to trust someone with your pet because it’s just like your child. It’s also difficult to get your dog to go for a walk or for some activity in a city like Chicago because not everybody has a backyard. Even the daily work lives of people are so busy and fast paced that sometimes they tend to miss giving their dogs, ample walking time. Dog walking has become an important industry now for people living fast lives. But before you give your dog to a dog walker, you need to ask them the following questions:

1. Are you a licensed, bonded and insured service provider?

If they are claiming to be a professional dog walking service, then they should show proof of their business license and insurance. Being “bonded” for a dog walker simply means that he/she has gone through a background check by the dog walking company.

2. Who will be my regular dog walker?

Will my dog walk alone or with a group? You need to always meet with your dog walker so that you have an idea of how the person is. Since they are professionals, chances are that your dog is going to get along just fine with the dog walker. A good dog walking company has multiple employees. Also ask if they will walk in groups because, sometimes dogs can be moody and not like each other because each breed comes with a different temperament. Also, managing a pack of dogs can be a bit hard for the walker as well.

3. Are you professionally trained in canine behavior and pack management?

A dog walker cannot be just somebody who loves dogs a lot. It takes a bit more training and a learning to understand canine behavior in order to manage them effectively. A dog walker needs to be well informed and aware about all the canine needs and behaviors so that the job is done right. Additionally, whatever training methods are used on the dogs should be humane and scientifically safe and sound. You need to find out what equipment they use and need to ensure that they won’t be using any shock or choke methods for any corrective behavior training on your dog. A good dog walker will always use positive reinforcement as a tactic to control them.

4. Have you been certified in canine first aid?

One never knows what might come in the walking path for dogs. People have shoes on, but dogs only have their bare paws to walk about in. So if there is some pointy object, say a glass shard or any tool which they encounter, an accident can occur. Even if it’s a pooch brawl with another dog, the dog walker needs to know first aid. You should also ask them about their standard protocol during an emergency which can include your dog getting injured or lost.
